Shiraz, Iran

29th December 2010 - 2nd January 2011

Of the four days we spent in Iran only one of them is of marginal interest. Taking our queue from Christmas day on Qeshm Island when we lazed about watching films, drinking non-alcoholic fruit beers and eating lots of crisps, we spent NYE much the same way... sorry exactly the same way.

We arrived on the bus early in the morning and walked into town to find a hotel, we slept most of the morning and after a little wander to find some food we spent the rest of the day just chilling out.

The next day was our big day of tourism and we spent the whole day wandering around Iran's cultural capital – it's the one place all Iranians insist you should go to. After a filling breakfast of gloopy beans and greens soup with fresh bread (looks like lumpy snot tastes surprisingly delicious) we started with the Citadel of Karim Khan, a royal court with a huge courtyard filled with citrus trees, there wasn't much to look at inside, some wax figures and the old bath houses.

We then walked across town to see the tomb of Hafez, the most famous and well loved poet of Persia, apparently all the Iranians love him and can quote their favourite lines of his poetry (if only English school kids could do so well in the cultural field). Outside there were men with tame budgies and boxes filled with poems, the budgie chooses a piece of paper for the customer and then the poem is given to him or her to read, it's supposed to have special significance for the reader (and is very cute to watch).

Inside the tomb is surrounded by lawns and flowers gardens, we sat down and had some tea then Djalma sat around in different places while I wandered around taking pictures. Mum called while we were sitting under some trees and we spoke for a while about all the things happening back home. We left soon after that and wandered around stopping at some hanging gardens dedicated to another poet, another set of gardens and a mosque. We finally went for dinner and then put our weary feet up back at the hotel.

The next day was New Years Eve and we spent the day in our room playing cards and watching sad films, we didn't even realise it was the 1st of January 2011 until 12.26am. Rock. And. Roll. We went to bed not long after that giving our bellies a break from all the different beers; pomegranate beer, lemon beer, malt beer, peach beer, melon beer, strawberry beer and any other different flavours we could lay our hands on, we drank it like it was beer and belched like it was beer and so much sugar had a similar effect to beer, it wasn't the worst NYE ever but it certainly was the quietest.

After our heavy night in we spent the next two days holed up in our room and before we knew it, it was time to pack and leave for the airport, we got a taxi at 5am for our early morning flight and then we were on our way to Mumbai (Bombay) in some of the most comfortable air plane seats, eating the best plane food we have ever tasted – no joke it was curry and the first of many.
