Hasankeyf, Turkey

4th September 2010

Hasankeyf is a small town on the tourist trail because of a ruined bridge crossing a beautiful river, an old village carved into rock and it's importance as a trade route an age ago.

From Hasankeyf, Turkey

We only stayed for a couple of hours or so, the village carved into rock (much like in Capadoccia but a much much smaller version) was off limits and covered in scaffolding, the restaurants by the river leading down from the old village was also roped off but we sneaked over a wall and got close enough to the village to take some photos and then decided to try our luck going down to River but got stopped by a police guard who ended up driving us to a nice spot for swimming the other end of the river.

The friendliest policemen we'd met in a long time! We walked along the River, under the new bridge where some delightful children thought it would be fun to throw rocks at us, and eventually made it to the the ruins of the old bridge, what was left of the three supporting arches crossing the Tigris River.

It was really beautiful but hot, we dropped the day bag in the shade and had fun taking pictures, goodness knows what came over me but I was feeling adventurous and decided to climb up one of the supports – it wasn't as easy as it looked let me tell you and the rock was baking – but I stayed up long enough to practise my 'hey ya' pose before scrambling back down and across.

We caught a minibus to the next town which only left after it drove around the minuscule village picking up residents from their houses to go to Tatvan.
