Mardin, Turkey

2nd September 2010

Despite the responsibility of navigation laying with me, I continued to read my book until the bus stopped and we got off. Not the best idea when there were plenty of landmarks which could have helped with my bearings.

Lonely Planet had only good things to say about Mardin so the reality of the town on top of a hill was a bit of a disappointment, there wasn't much to do and we saw most things there were to see in the afternoon. We sat in a rooftop cafe which looked out over some of the town and fields below and up to the castle/fortress above, and drank some very expensive Sprite. The town was pretty and mainly lined along the one main street, we stopped by a few buildings to take pictures and then after some hard chewy ice-cream we wandered down round some streets to the bus station where we got a bus to the next town, Midyat.
